QUIZ ANSWERS: 2011 WEEK #4

1. RULING: Game ends. Final score A27-B28. The dead-ball foul by Team A causes the clock to stop. The 10-second subtraction applies. NOTE: If this happens in the second quarter the penalty will not be enforced at the start of the second half. Only personal fouls and unsportsmanlike conduct fouls carry over to the second half and would also carry over to an extra period. [EXAMPLES: 10-SECOND SUBTRACTION, Play #19]

2. RULING: A 4/8 A22; Snap. Team B will accept the 5-yard penalty. Team B will not elect the ZAP 10 since they are behind in the score and need to conserve time. Since Team B does not elect the ZAP 10, the game clock starts on the snap (3-4-4).

3. RULING: Half ends. Team B will accept the penalty. Team B may elect the ZAP 10 since the clock was running when the dead ball foul occurred. Team B will elect the ZAP 10. The half is over and the penalty carries over to the second half.

4. RULING: B 1/10 A24; Snap. Scrimmage kick play. Team A failed to make a first down on fourth down. Team B will not elect to have the penalty enforced from the previous spot. The 5-yard penalty will be enforced from the spot where the subsequent dead ball belongs to Team B, A's 29.

5. RULING: A 4/goal B4; Ready. The ball becomes dead when touched by A82 while A82 is in contact with the goal line pylon. The ball is considered to have gone out of bounds between the goal lines even though the ball has not penetrated the plane of the sideline. The fumble went forward and out of bounds and is returned to the spot of the fumble, B's 4. A82 cannot catch or recover the ball while his foot is out of bounds including contacting B's goal line pylon.

6. RULING: B 1/10 B44. The foul by A88 is a live ball foul. Team B is likely to have the 15-yard penalty enforced from the spot where the subsequnt dead ball belongs to Team B, B's 29. Team B could elect that the penalty be enforced from the previous spot, A's 38. It would be A 4/17 A23. Team B could, but will not, elect to take the ball at the spot of illegal touching without penalty enforcement. It would be B 1/10 B37.

7. RULING: A 3/8 B18; Snap. The result of the play is a touchdown. A88 is ruled to have voluntarily been out of bounds before touching the pass. A88 was airborne when he touched the pass so he commits an illegal touching foul (7-3-4). The penalty is loss of down at the previous spot but would offset a live ball foul by Team B. The play is reviewable since the pass was touched by an ineligible receiver.
