2017 MINI MISSIVE #11

IMPETUS (8-7)

IMPETUS: Impetus involves the ball going from the field of play into an end zone. There is no impetus when the ball remains in the field of play. A muff does not change impetus unless the ball is at rest in the field of play. Impetus can change when a player bats a loose ball after it strikes the ground or kicks (intentional by rule) a ball.

PLAY

RULING

1
2nd/6 B16. B44 intercepts A17's forward pass in B's end zone, advances the ball into the field of play and then retreats back into B's end zone where he is downed.
Safety. B f/k B20. Team A scores two points. B44 imparted the new impetus. The impetus from the forward pass was expended when the ball entered the field of play in B44's possession.
2
2nd/6 B16. B44 intercepts A17's forward pass in B's end zone, fumbles while still in B's end zone and the ball rolls into the field of play. The ball is muffed by (a) A88; (b) B96; or (c) no one and rolls back into B's end zone and out of bounds.
Safety in (a), (b) and (c). B f/k B20. Team A scores two points. The new impetus is derived from B44's fumble. The ball went from the field of play into B's end zone. It would be a touchback if B44's fumble went out of bounds in the field of play between the goal lines.
3
4th/14 A6. The snap hits blocking back A44's thigh and rolls forward. B55 bats the ball backward from A's 2. The ball hits B66 on A's 3 and rolls into A's end zone. A4 picks up the ball and punts. The punt is blocked and the ball goes out of A's end zone without entering the field of play.
Touchback. A 1/10 A20. The impetus was imparted by B55's legal backward bat. The impetus imparted by B55's bat would have been expended if A4's punt hit in the field of play. It would then be a safety if the punt went out of bounds in A's end zone.
NOTE: Play very highly unlikely.
4
2nd/12 A8. QB A17's backward pass is airborne when it is batted forward by B96. The ball goes into and out of A's end zone.
Safety. A f/k A20. Team B scores two points. The impetus came from A17's backward pass. Batting a backward pass in flight does not impart new impetus.
5
4th/17 A13. A4's punt is blocked and hits on A's 16. The ball takes a reverse bounce and is rolling on A's 8 when B96 bats the ball into A's end zone. A49 recovers in A's end zone and advances to A's 38 where he is downed.
Touchback. A 1/10 A20. The impetus by B96 is also a foul. A49 may recover but may not advance since the punt crossed the neutral zone. Team A could, but will not, accept the penalty. It would be A 4/7 A's 23. NOTE: PSKE would apply if Team B recovered in A's end zone. It would be B 1/10 A18.
6
4th/goal B4. A4's field goal attempt is blocked. The ball does not cross the neutral zone. B98 bats ball on B's 6 into B's end zone. B43 picks up the ball and advances for a touchdown.
Safety. B f/k B20. Team A scores two points. The impetus is the bat by B98 although this bat is not a foul. The ball becomes dead when the scrimmage kick hits in B's end zone since the ball was not touched by a Team B player after the kick crossed the neutral zone.
7
4th/8 B48. A4's punt is rolling on B's 8 when B44 bats the ball backward. B22 recovers in B's end zone and advances to B's 36 where he is downed. B22 blocks A84 below the waist on B's 6 during the punt.
B 1/10 B3. The kick ends in B's end zone so the postscrimmage kick spot is B's 20. The result of the play would be a safety if B22 was downed in B's end zone since B44 provided the impetus.
