Fourth Down Fumbles - 7-2-2-a-Exception 2


Rule 7-2-2-a-Exception 2: On fourth down before a change of team possession, when a Team A fumble is caught or recovered by a Team A player other than the fumbler, the ball is dead. If the catch or recovery is beyond the spot of the fumble, the ball is returned to the spot of the fumble. If the fumble is caught or recovered behind the spot of the fumble, the ball remains at the spot of the catch or recovery.

B 1/10 B32; Snap. The ball is dead when A68 catches or recovers the ball. The ball is returned to the spot of the fumble.

B 1/10 B32; Snap. The ball is dead when A68 catches or recovers the ball. The ball remains at the spot of the catch or recovery.

A 1/10 B27; Ready. The ball is dead when A68 catches or recovers the ball. The ball remains at the spot of the catch or recovery.

4th/6 B36. A29 runs to B's 35 where he fumbles. A29 catches or recovers the fumble on B's 33 and advances to B's 29 where he is downed.
A 1/10 B29; Ready. Legal advance since A29 regained player possession of his fumble.

4th/3 B13. A29 runs to B's 5 where he fumbles. A68 catches or recovers the fumble in B's end zone.
A 1/goal B5; Ready. The ball is returned to the spot of the fumble. The clock starts on the ready because the ball is brought back to B's 5.

4th/6 B36. A29 runs to B's 26 where he fumbles. B73 catches or recovers the fumble and advances to B's 22 where he fumbles. A63 catches or recovers the fumble on B's 27 and advances into B's end zone.
Touchdown. A try B3. The fourth down fumble rule applies prior to a change of team possession.

4th/8 A12. A6 catches the ball after the snap and fumbles in A's end zone. A63 catches or recovers the fumble on A's 4.
Safety. A f/k A20. The ball is dead when A63 catches or recovers the ball. The ball is returned to the spot of the fumble.

4th/6 B36. A29 runs to B's 29 where he attempts a backward pass. A64 catches or recovers the backward pass on B's 32 and advances across B's goal line.
Touchdown. A try B3. A64 may advance the backward pass.

Try B3. A14's attempted handoff to A33 on B's 6 is muffed and rolls into B's end zone where A33 recovers.
Try unsuccessful. A f/k A35. The fumble is by A14, not A33. The ball is returned to the spot of the fumble.

4th/3 B43. A17 takes the snap and places the ball on the ground on B's 46. A68 turns, picks up the ball and advances to B's 27 where he is downed.
B 1/10 B46; Snap. This is not a planned loose ball in the vicinity of the snapper since the ball becomes dead when recovered by A68. A68 may not advance a fourth down fumble.
