BATTING FROM FIELD OF PLAY INTO AN END ZONE (PLAYS)

Impetus involves the ball going from the field of play into an end zone. If the ball doesn't go into an end zone, there is no impetus. When batting a backward pass or fumble, impetus occurs only when the ball is is batted into an end zone after the ball has touched the ground. It is a foul when a backward pass in flight is batted forward by a player of that team. The attempt to gain yardage is no longer a factor.
