IMPETUS (8-7)


IMPETUS: (a) Impetus involves the ball going from the field of play into an end zone; (b) A muff does not change impetus unless the ball is at rest in the field of play; (c) Impetus can change when a player bats a loose ball after it strikes the ground or kicks a ball.

PLAY

RULING

2nd and 6 on B's 16. B44 intercepts A17's forward pass in B's end zone, advances the ball into the field of play and then retreats back into B's end zone where he is downed.
Safety. B44 imparted the impetus. The impetus from the forward pass was expended when the ball entered the field of play.

2nd and 6 on B's 16. B44 intercepts A17's forward pass in B's end zone, fumbles while still in B's end zone and the ball rolls into the field of play. The ball is muffed by (a) A88; (b) B96; or (c) no one and rolls back into B's end zone and out of bounds.
Safety in (a), (b) and (c). The impetus is derived from B44's fumble. The ball went from the field of play into B's end zone. It would be a touchback if B44's fumble went out of bounds in the field of play.

2nd and 6 on B's 16. B44 intercepts A17's forward pass in B's end zone, fumbles while still in B's end zone and the ball rolls into the field of play. A89 bats the ball into B's zone and out of bounds.
B 1/10 B35. A89 provided the relevant impetus. A89 fouled after a change of team possession in the end zone and the result of the play is a touchback. Reference: 2009 NCAA Play Situations #1, Play #7. (10-2-2-d-2-a)

4th and 14 on A's 6. The snap hits blocking back A44's thigh and rolls forward. B55 bats the ball backward from A's 2. The ball hits B66 on A's 3 and rolls into A's end zone. A4 picks up the ball and punts. The ball hits on A's 16 and rolls back into and out of A's end zone.
Safety. Team B scores two points. The impetus was imparted by A4's punt. The impetus imparted by B55's bat was expended when A4's punt hit in the field of play. Touchback if A4's punt is blocked and the ball goes out of A's end zone without entering the field of play.

Try on B's 3. QB A17's forward pass is intercepted by B44 in B's end zone where B44 is hit and fumbles. Either (a) A56 or (b) B65 muffs the ball on B's two and the ball rolls into B's goal line pylon.
Safety in (a) and (b). Team A scores one point. The impetus came from the fumble by B44. The location of B44 and the spot of the fumble are not relevant as long as B44 had possession of a live ball.

4th and 17 on A's 13. A4's punt is partially blocked and hits on A's 16. The ball takes a reverse bounce and is rolling on A's 8 when B96 bats the ball into A's end zone. A49 recovers in A's end zone and advances to A's 38 where he is downed.
Touchback. A49 may recover but may not advance since the punt crossed the neutral zone. Team A could accept the penalty. It would be A 4/2 A's 28.

4th and goal on B's 4. A4's field goal attempt is blocked. The ball does not cross the neutral zone. B98 bats ball on B's 6 into B's end zone. B43 picks up the ball and advances for a touchdown.
Safety. Team A scores two points. The impetus is the bat by B98 although this bat is not a foul. The ball becomes dead when the scrimmage kick hits in B's end zone since the ball was not touched by a Team B player after the kick crossed the neutral zone.

4th and 8 on B's 48. A4's punt is rolling on B's 8 when B44 bats the ball backward. B22 recovers in B's end zone and advances to B's 36 where he is downed. B22 blocks A84 below the waist on B's 6 during the punt.
B 1/10 B3. The kick ends in B's end zone so the postscrimmage kick spot is B's 20. The result of the play would be a safety if B22 was downed in B's end zone since B44 provided the impetus.
