RUNNING PLAY (2-30-4) [Penalty Enforcement]

Rule 2-30-4-a: If the ball carrier loses possession by a fumble, backward pass or illegal forward pass, the running play includes the spot where the run ends and the loose ball interval before possession is regained or the ball is declared dead. Although perhaps not supported by rule, the interval from the start of the snap until a player gains possession is a running play for penalty enforcement purposes. The basic spot is the previous spot. In the case where there are multiple running plays in a down, crew coordination is essential to determine the specific running play, thus related run, where the foul occurred.

2nd and 10 from A's 30. A12, in shotgun formation, muffs the snap. A33 accidentally kicks the loose ball. A88 recovers the ball on A's 36 and advances to A's 44 where he is downed. B96 commits a personal foul prior to A88's recovery.
A 1/10 A45. The personal foul occurred before player possession after the snap. The 15-yard penalty is enforced from the previous spot, A's 30. The penalty would be enforced from the end of A88's run, A's 44, if the foul occurred after A88 got possession.

3rd and 20 on A's 30. A15 runs the option and is on A's 32 when he pitches the ball. A22 catches the pitch on A's 29 and advances to A's 42 where he is downed. B76 commits a personal foul during the backward pass.
A 1/10 A47. The foul occurred during A15's running play which ended when A22 got possession. Within that running play, A15's related run ended beyond the neutral zone. The 15-yard penalty is enforced from the end of A15's run, A's 32.

3rd and 20 on A's 30. A15 runs the option and is on A's 28 when he pitches the ball. A22 catches the pitch on A's 27 and advances to A's 47 where he is downed. B76 commits a personal foul just after A22 catches the pitch.
A 1/10 B38. The foul occurred during A22's running play in which A22's related run ended beyond the neutral zone. The 15-yard penalty is enforced from the end of A22's run, A's 47.

2nd and 10 from A's 30. A18 rolls out to his right and hands the ball on A's 24 to wideout A84 who is running to his left. A84 then hands the ball on A's 22 to wideout A82 who is running to the right (double reverse). A82 runs out of bounds on A's 38. Strong safety B44 commits a personal foul in front of the BJ on A's 42 just prior to A82 receiving the handoff.
A 1/10 A45. The foul occurred during A84's running play which ended when A82 got possession. Within that running play, A84's related run ended behind the neutral zone. The 15-yard penalty is enforced from the previous spot, A's 30. The penalty would be enforced from A's 38 if the foul occurred after A82 got possession.

1st and 10 on A's 20. A44 takes a handoff from A19 on A's 17, reverses field and fumbles on A's 22. A88 recovers on A's 18 and is downed on A's 24. During A44's run, B66 commits a personal foul.
A 1/10 A37. The foul occurred during A44's running play which ended when A88 got possession. Within that running play, A44's related run ended beyond the neutral zone. The 15-yard penalty is enforced from the end of A44's run, A's 22.

1st and 10 on A's 20. A44 takes a handoff from A19 on A's 17, reverses field and fumbles on A's 42. A88 recovers on A's 36 and is downed on A's 33. During A44's run, A57 commits a holding foul on A's 39.
A 1/1 A29. The foul occurred during A44's running play in which A44's related run ended beyond the neutral zone. The 10-yard penalty is enforced from the spot of the foul, A's 39. The spot of the foul is behind the basic spot, A's 42.
